Since the museum’s opening, the Apollo 11 Command Module was displayed in the Milestones of Flight Gallery, encased in form-fitting Plexiglas. However, during a redesign of the museum, the capsule was relocated into the new Destination Moon gallery as its showpiece artifact. The capsule is now displayed without its former casing.

During the construction of the new gallery, the capsule, along with other artifacts toured several cities across the United States.
